Information on lawyers in Strasbourg
Lawyers in Strasbourg belong to the Strasbourg Bar Association (Barreau de Strasbourg). With around 1,200 members, it is one of the ten largest bar associations in France.
The association maintains its own museum of lawyers (Musée du Barreau) and is a member of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE).
In Strasbourg, there are numerous solo practitioners (specializing in areas such as traffic law, family law, and inheritance law) as well as several larger firms that provide advice in business law, particularly in corporate law and M&A. In addition, there are other specialized lawyers, for example in insolvency law (procédures collectives) or employment law, who offer both legal representation in court and legal advice for companies. The firms based in Strasbourg serve a broad spectrum of clients: from regional startups and medium-sized family businesses to international corporations with branches in Alsace.
Many firms highlight their cross-border expertise and multilingualism, as Strasbourg’s economy is closely intertwined with both Germany and Switzerland. It is therefore common for advice in areas such as French contract and corporate law to also be offered in German or English, making it easier for foreign investors to enter the market.
How to find lawyers in Strasbourg?
Qivive, with four offices in Germany and France and nearly 30 professionals, is one of the leading Franco-German law firms and has also been represented in Strasbourg since September 2025.
You can find additional lawyers in Strasbourg (and the Alsace region) in the Annuaire des Avocats.
What are the particularities for lawyers in Strasbourg?
In addition to the international nature of legal advice (many German, Swiss, or Austrian companies choose Alsace as an entry point into the French market), there are certain legal aspects that lawyers in Strasbourg must consider in their daily practice, which set them apart from other lawyers in France.
One particularity is the continued application of local law (“droit local”) in Alsace, a legal legacy from German rule (1871–1918). While it only applies in specific areas of law, it does create procedural and institutional differences.
For example, there are no separate commercial courts (Tribunaux de commerce) in Alsace. Instead, commercial cases are heard by special chambers within the ordinary courts. At the Tribunal Judiciaire de Strasbourg, for instance, there is a commercial chamber (Chambre Commerciale) comprised of a professional judge and two lay commercial judges, which fulfills the functions of a typical commercial court. The same applies to Mulhouse, Colmar, and other locations. Previously, minor commercial matters up to €10,000 were handled by local courts. In addition, local law provides for special rules, such as personal bankruptcy for non-traders (the so-called “faillite civile”).
Overall, Alsace occupies a special position within the French legal system—both because of its size (with Strasbourg as an important judicial and legal hub) and because of its legal particularities, which have their roots in the region’s complex history.
What should you know about Strasbourg?
Strasbourg is the capital of the Grand Est region and an important hub for international relations in Europe. The city hosts institutions such as the European Parliament and the European Court of Human Rights, and due to its location at the border with Germany, Strasbourg is a perfect place for Franco-German cooperation and cross-border projects.
Alsace is recognized for its strong international business connections; around one third of companies benefit from subsidiaries or investments from Germany, Switzerland, the USA, Japan, and Scandinavia. Well-known German brands such as Adidas, Schaeffler, Merck, and Liebherr are present, taking advantage of the region as an attractive location for production and investment.
